How we take our daily breath and what we do with it will always have an effect on our lives. It is obvious that if we breathe through a cigarette or cigar then we just may not be getting as much oxygen to our cells as we should. Conversely if we increase the flow of oxygen through our fabulous bodies what will we gain? Well not only can we lower our blood pressure and increase our cardiovascular effectiveness but we also tone up our digestive and pulmonary systems. That means we no only live longer but we enjoy each and every day of it.
A great approach to better breathing techniques is through the practice of Yoga. While the practice of Yoga originated in India over three thousand years ago the Western world is just beginning its widespread acceptance. Being the late bloomers in this study we are just not becoming aware just how good Yoga can be for body and health. The caveat is that an early learner should proceed under guidance of one already learned in the art. This is where our hurry up society can fail us. Therefore we should examine some safety guidelines before we get carried away.
Of prime importance in Yoga is breathing and the profound effect it has on our systems. The science of breathing is called Pranayama and if you are a newcomer to Yoga this study should always be undertaken under supervision of a qualified instructor. If performed improperly breathing techniques could backfire and cause illness. This especially is true if you suffer from an asthma or shortness of breath due to a cardiovascular deficiency.
A few general breathing guidelines should be followed for personal safety:
• When performing breathing exercises you should never push yourself to the point of exhaustion.
• You should never perform individual breathing exercises with haste..
• Never be in a hurry to become proficient with breathe exercises
• You should be able to concentrate on the exercises while being performed.
• Your breathing routine should remain gentle in nature
It is important to realize that you should not practice breathing routines when you are emotionally upset or tired. Some techniques used may induce dizziness or nausea. If you begin to feel that way you should take a break from the routine and relax for a period of time. And for a bit of repetition you should not practice Yoga breathing routines in an area full of smoke, chemicals or other toxic materials. If you are practicing Yoga breathing you are deliberately drawing air deeply into your lungs and you want to use the best air possible.
Remember your intentions are to enhance your health. This means you should strive for smooth, steady and continuous breaths. If your breathing becomes ragged and uneven you need to stop and retake control of your efforts. Follow these guidelines and be sure to place yourself under the supervision of an instructor and your Yoga experience should take you on your path to better health.
