Kundalini Yoga, Awaking the Chakras
By Conrad Raw
Kundalini Yoga is one of the meditative yoga's,
which include a number of movements, concentration, vocalizations and breathing
techniques. Kundalini Yoga focuses on spiritual growth. It focuses on the spine
and endocrine systems and involves opening the chakras. The word chakra is a
Sanskrit word meaning wheel. Kundalini is another Sanskrit word meaning coiled,
like a snake, so there is a natural relationship with the chakra system.
Kundalini, according to Kundalini Yoga system
is said to be coiled up in the back of the root chakra. Kundalini yoga awakens
and raises the energy-giving chakras from the base of the spine, the root chakra
and activates the six chakras as Kundalini energy travels through each of the
chakras of the spine. The opening of the higher chakras represent advanced
spiritual growth, the lower chakras are just as important because the chakras
should be opened or awakened from bottom to the top.
There are seven main chakras. The Crown chakra,
located at the top of the head is seen as the master chakra, which controls the
other chakras, something like the pituitary gland, which controls the endocrine
system with hormones. The chakras are closely related to the endocrine systems
and the ganglia's of the nervous system. The brow chakra or third eye chakra is
located at the forehead between the eyes and influences time, awareness and light.
It is associated with the Pineal gland, which secretes the hormone melatonin, which
in turn, regulates our wake-sleep patterns. The throat chakra is located at the
throat and influences communication and expression. The throat chakra is related
to the thyroid gland responsible for growth and maturation. The heart chakra is
located between the breasts near the heart. The heart chakra is related to love,
well-being and balance. The Thymus, also located in the chest is part of our endocrine
system and our immune system as it produces T-cells that strengthen our immune system
to ward off disease. The solar plexus chakra is located near the navel or the solar
plexus and is associated with energy and digestion. It is also related to the pancreas
and the adrenal glands responsible for digestion and the conversion of food to energy.
The sacral chakra is located in the groin and influences sexuality, emotion and creativity.
It influences the testes and ovaries responsible for reproduction and emotional mood
swings. The base chakra is called the root chakra and is located between the anus
and the genitals. It is seen as the grounding chakra as it relates to survival,
security and the human potential.
The Kundalini energy resides in the root chakra,
coiled and ready to spring into action to raise us to the highest spiritual
potential of the crown chakra.
