Anti Aging-Slowing the Process with Yoga

Yoga Instruction

By Joe Patterson

There's an important philosophy in yoga - that a person's age is determined by how flexible their spine is and not how long they've been alive. This may explain why so many yogis, a practitioner of yoga, seem to be poster children for longevity.

Yoga is essentially a series of exercises or poses that are typically done slowly. The focus is on form, breathing and the meditative elements of the exercise. It also happens to be a great way to slow the aging process.

If you're considering taking up yoga, keep reading to learn the three ways yoga can improve your overall health and slow down aging.

Yoga Improves Flexibility

Yoga uses various positions that help stretch the muscles and subsequently give you increased flexibility. Flexibility means your body has a wider range of motion and your joints and tendons are relaxed, rather than contracted or in pain.

Instead of seizing up or spending your senior years in a chair, this greater flexibility increases your mobility, reduces aches and pains and gives you freedom of movement.

Yoga Increases Relaxation

Yoga isn't just a stationary physical activity. It's also used as a way to connect the mind, body and spirit.

Breathing exercises are an essential part of yoga, and the breathing that is used helps to relax certain parts of your body to create an overall feeling of sedation. That relaxation allows you to release stress, which is a major contributor to signs of premature aging.

Remember, by reducing your daily stress levels, you're reducing the appearance of frown lines and furrowed brows. You're also reducing your risk for heart disease and other coronary health issues.

Yoga Makes You Stronger

Yoga is also about building strength. As your muscles become stronger and the blood starts circulating through your body, you'll feel younger and healthier. That strength can also help your body fight off disease, support its bones and, of course, retain its youthfulness.

Anyone Can Do Yoga

The best thing about yoga is that anyone can do. Almost all of yoga's positions can be modified, depending on your flexibility, strength and range of mobility. As a form of exercise, it's also low-impact and low-exertion, meaning those with joint or respiratory problems can also participate.

So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and stop aging in its tracks by joining a local yoga class or picking up a book or DVD to follow along.
